We are very excited to celebrate that almost three years ago, Afflecks became the first shopping centre in the UK to be a fully dog friendly shopping venue!

Once again Afflecks is delighted to have been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2013.

This prestigious award, which places Afflecks in the top-performing 10% of all businesses worldwide on TripAdvisor, is awarded to Afflecks for consistently acheiving high ratings from TripAdvisor travellers.

Afflecks has just unveiled another new look. The recently renovated exterior of the building has been further enhanced with a galvanised steel sculpture.

The sculpture of a tree by Manchester blacksmith David Hyde was commissioned by the Afflecks team to compliment a series of mosaics by artist Mark Kennedy that are currently being designed and will be installed over the next few months.

The sculpture comprises of over 200 steel leaves and branches stretching 17 metres across the Tib Street elevation. Tony Martin the manager of Afflecks commented “We loved the idea of a tree as it symbolises something that’s ever changing depending on seasons and we felt that the root of the tree would represent Afflecks first being established in 1982 and the tree growing represents how the business has evolved over the years”

He added “We are passionate about the Northern Quarter and contributing to the area. We hope that this latest addition to the building will add to people’s enjoyment of the unique experiencing that is shopping at Afflecks”

David Hyde said that he liked the idea of creating something slightly surreal and the idea of being able to bring the rural in to the urban.

In 2006, as part of CowParade Manchester, artist Tracey Cartledge was commissioned to produce three can-canning cows for the Northern Quarter.

Afflecks rescued this one from potential slaughter and arranged for Tracey to lovingly restore it.

Nearly three years ago, young Goth woman Sophie Lancaster, and her boyfriend Rob Maltby were savagely beaten by a gang of youths, simply because they chose to dress ‘differently’. Sophie died from her injuries.

Following Sophie’s death, her mother, friends and family set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, with one aim: Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance,  Everywhere, and have campaigned tireless to change attitudes in society, promoting tolerance, understanding and respect for all subcultures.

And now, Rob, Sophie’s boyfriend and artsist has created his first collection of outstanding paintings, in his own unique style, to celebrate Sophie and all that she believed in and raise crucial awareness and funds for the foundation.

The collection of 15 canvases, named Crimson Iris: The Art of Sophie will be displayed within Afflecks from Monday 7th June. The paintings will be available to buy during the duration of the exhibition.

Afflecks has always attracted a melting pot of cultures, it’s a hub of diversity, where people have always felt comfortable meeting without fear and prejudice, so it felt only natural to offer The Sophie Lancaster Foundation the exhibition space for this collection.
