Afflecks has just unveiled another new look. The recently renovated exterior of the building has been further enhansed with a galvanised steel sculpture.

The sculpture of a tree by Manchester blacksmith David Hyde was commissioned by the Afflecks team to compliment a series of mosaics by artist Mark Kennedy that are currentlyy being designed and will be installed over the next few months.

The sculpture comprises of over 200 steel leaves and branches stretching 17 metres across the Tib Street elevation. Tony Martin the manager of Afflecks commented “We loved the idea of a tree as it symbolises something that’s ever changing depending on seasons and we felt that the root of the tree would represent Afflecks first being established in 1982 and the tree growing represents how the business has evolved over the years”

He added “We are passionate about the Northern Quarter aand contributing to the area. We hope that this latest addition to the building will add to people’s enjoyment of the unique experiencing that is shopping at Afflecks”

David Hyde said that he liked the idea of creating something slightly surreal and the idea of being able to bring the rural in to the urban.

One of the things that always let Afflecks down was the poor state that the public facilities were in, this was highlighted when Afflecks was short listed in the Manchester Tourism Awards in 2010 where, we lost points due to the poor state of the toilets.

We have recently had a total refurbismment of the toilets and they look fantastic, we even have baby changing facilities!

The toilets have recently been ‘Afflexed’, as you will know in Afflecks there is a surprise around every corner, whether its a piece of art work or a special find! we wanted the toilets to be that little bit different too! You will find exploding atom bomb and exit sign artwork above the toilet basins and the boys will have our very own Miki waiting to ’size them up’ when they use our urinal!

A big thank you goes to Kustom Korner on the 2nd floor who produced the art work and John from Resurrect Studios for the photographs and of course to Miki from Extreme Largeness.

Be sure to pop in and see the recently expanded shop on the 2nd floor which, now has an even bigger selection of exclusively made garments and accessories.

Pagan Planet is the ‘mystical zone’ on the 3rd floor. Here you will find Lucy and her tarot cards ready with a reading for you.

At Pagan Planet you will also find a range of tarot cards, pagan alter items and accessories to purchase. Lucy is a clairvoyant and practicing witch with 30 years experience, so you know that you are in good company. Beginners to the Craft are particularly welcome.

On Saturday 30th April, Afflecks hosted its annual event ‘Afflecks Day’. This year saw a circus theme with special performances from Circus Maximus, the fresh new circus and street arts group www.circus-maximus.co.uk Team Afflecks got in to the spirit by dressing up as clowns and circus animals!

We had live acoustic performances,  live art created by local artists Daryl, Benjamin Murphy & Ben Gallagher, Tarot Readings, a Tombola, Ghosts in the Machine hosted back to back 3 minute theatre performances and there were some fantastic Dancers in the window at Cyberdog. There was a great buzz about the place with over  6000 visitors on the day.

We also raised just over £1000 for our nominated charity OnSide, OnSide aims to give underprivilaged young people something to do and someone to talk to; to inspire them to lead healthier and more positive lives and raise their aspirations so that they may grow to become happy, caring and responsible citizens.

OnSide’s vision is to build, deliver and sustain a network of 21st century youth centres across the North West which will give young people top quality, safe and affordable places to go in their leisure time.

A big thank you goes to Carl Myatt, director of ground floor unit Extreme Largeness, Carl raised £600 by having his legs waxed (ouch!)

On Saturday 30th April there will be a circus themed extravaganza held at Afflecks.

It will be our third Afflecks Day celebration and is an opportunity for the stall holders and the team to thank customers and supporters over the last year.

On the day there will be live music from local performers, fancy dress, live art and theatrical performances. 

We will also be raising money for our nominated charity Onside  www.onsidenorthwest.org there will be a tombola with some fantastic prizes and a treasure hunt where participators will have the chance to win some Afflecks gift vouchers.

Teeth Tech would like to offer a full teeth whitening session that is split in to two seperate half hour sessions that allows you the time to get it done within your lunch break!

The two sessions must be carried out in two consecutive days for maximum effect.

Here is our flyer competition winner Patricia Marques holding her fabulous winning design.

We had a great response to the competition with some fabulous designs, but the judges felt that Patricia’s design was everything that they were looking for.

Patricia won £100 in Afflecks gift vouchers and her design has gone to print and will be featured in all marketing material to promote this years Afflecks Day.

On Afflecks Day we will be holding a circus themed extravaganza to celebrate everything Afflecks. It’s our chance to thank all of our lovely customers and supporters and celebrate! On the day there will be live music, fancy dress, circus performers, live art, a 10% discount at selected stalls and lots more…phew.
